The Ration Ticket

Excerpt from the diary of Jules Flegmon.

12 June . -- Life ration tickets are selling at astronomical prices, and you can't find them anymore for fewer than 500 francs. This must mean that poor people have become more stingy with their existence, and the rich greedier. I bought ten of them at the beginning of the month for 200 francs apiece and the morning after that purchase, I received a letter from my uncle Antoine in Orléans who sent me nine. So here I am with nineteen tickets. Since the month has thirty days, I have five too many. I won't have any difficulty in selling them.
